Eagle Project Dedicated to the Memory of Sergeant Canamare
Eagle Project In Memory of Sergeant George Joseph Canamare
Sergeant George Joseph Canamare honorably served his country during the Vietnam War, making the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. Born on April 21, 1943, he was a native of Cedarhurst, New York, in Nassau County. Drafted into the U.S. Army through Selective Service, he attained the rank of Sergeant and was assigned to F Troop, 8th Cavalry, American Division, as a Light Weapons Infantryman.
From a young age, Sergeant Canamare demonstrated a strong sense of duty and leadership as a proud member of Boy Scouts of America Troop 20. The values of service, courage, and commitment that he learned as a Scout carried through to his military service.
Beginning his tour of duty on August 31, 1968, Sergeant Canamare displayed unwavering dedication and bravery. Tragically, he lost his life on February 8, 1969, in Quang Tin Province, Vietnam. In recognition of his heroism and sacrifice, he was awarded the Purple Heart.
His name is forever etched on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., honored on Panel 33W, Line 83. Sergeant Canamare’s legacy of service, leadership, and sacrifice will never be forgotten.
He gave his all in the service of his country, and his memory lives on in the hearts of those who knew him and in the gratitude of a nation that honors him.
The original idea was to repurpose an old mailbox given to me by Mr. Roger Colena into a Flag Drop for the community Over the course of the project Scoutleader Corless shared the story of Sgt. Canamare and how he was a member of Troop 20 in the 1960’s. I wanted to dedicate the Flag Drop to his memory as well as all of the Veterans buried at St. Joes Trinity.
